Ever wonder why you can tell when a police car siren is heading your way, or when it’s driving away? That’s because of a little phenomenon known as the Doppler effect. This effect is exploited in Doppler ultrasonic flow meters to determine the rate at which fluids flow.

How Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Meters Measure Fluid Velocity

Pitch changes when sound waves reflect off something moving (like water rushing by). The flow meter listens to these pitch fluctuations to determine the speed of the fluid. It’s to the human ear what the change in volume of a car engine is to the motorist trying to gauge whether it’s speeding up.

Ultrasonic Doppler flow meters have sensors that transmit sound waves into the fluid. These sound waves then reflect off particles in the fluid and return to the sensor. By timing how long it takes the sound waves to return, and noting what pitch they return at, the flow meter can work out how fast the fluid is moving.
