Vortex shedding flow meters are a special set of tools that give us a way to measure liquids as they flow, although using tools to measure the way liquids move is complicated. Such flow meters generate a ‘vortex’ that is a swirling motion, in the liquid as it flows in a pipe. By studying how these vortices form and shed from an object — a particular kind of object known as a bluff body — engineers can determine how much liquid is traveling through the pipe.

Vortex shedding flow meters operate according to a principle called the “Kármán Vortex Street” to measure the flow of fluids. This results in a regular formation of vortices as liquid passes over the bluff body. This would allow us to estimate the density in the same way as they do with an hourglass, where once we know how many vortices have been launched in a given period of time, we can calculate how many have been released per minute and thus the flow rate of the liquid.
