Thermal flow meters measure by monitoring the temperature of the gas and the heat lost to the fluid to infer the flow. When a gas flows through a pipe, it brings heat with it. The thermal meters contains sensors that are capable of detecting such heat and using this to measure the flow rate.

How thermal flow meters accurately measure gas flow rates

Very sensitive sensors in a thermal flowmeter can detect even tiny variations in heat. As the gas passes through the meter, the sensors calculate what amount of heat is carried away. The thermal flow sensor meter can measure how quickly the gas is running by comparing the heat at various locations in its pipe.
