An electromagnetic flow meter is a unique tool that is used to gauge the speed at which liquids travel. This tool is vital in numerous places, from water treatment plants and chemical factories to our own homes. In this lesson, you will learn more about electromagnetic flow meters and how they work.
An electromagnetic flow meter employs magnets to assist in measuring how quickly a liquid is flowing. It is crisscrossed by a pipe through which the liquid enters and two electrodes on either side of the pipe. As the fluid courses through the pipe, it generates a magnetic field. The electrodes record the voltage due to this magnetic field, which can then be used to calculate how fast the liquid is flowing.
There are also a lot of reasons to use electromagnetic flow meters and one of them is that they provide very precise readings. That’s because they have no moving parts, so there is no friction or wear that can alter the measurements. They are also highly reliable, and can measure many different kinds of liquids, ranging from water to chemicals.
Fouad et al [13] conducted an experiment to identify total and internal pressure in the 2D electromagnetic flow meter. The electrodes then determine how much voltage the magnetic field will induce, which in turn tells us how quickly the liquid is flowing. The flow meter is able to determine the velocity of the liquid precisely by measuring this voltage.
There are many types of flow meters, but a lot of times electromagnetic flow meters are better due to their accuracy and reliability. For instance, mechanical flow meters — such as paddlewheel meters — may be sensitive to liquid viscosity and suffer from wear and tear. If air bubbles are present in the liquid, ultrasonic flow meters may be unsatisfactory. These problems do not affect electromagnetic flow meters, which can provide satisfactory measurement in many applications.
When installing an electromagnetic flow meter, you want to ensure the pipe size is correct and the electrodes are in the right place. The flow meter must also be readily accessible for maintenance. Maintenance is necessary to ensure the flow meter functions properly. This involves the cleansing of electrodes and an inspection of the appearance of these electrodes.
